Let me clear-out the big elephant in the room. Hip-hop and America collided over the weekend:
- Donald Glover. Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino took on SNL.
- But it was the video he released for the latter after his SNL performance that created a #MAJORKEY buzz.
- "This is America" tackles gun violence, police brutality, media misdirection, stagnancy.
- All while Childish dances in Jim Crow-style parody.
- Plus, a SZA cameo.
Pure art and shook my whole entire being. I love you, Childish. And I also love YOU. Thanks for letting me rant.
Now that that's out of the way, let's talk Oakland. Oakland, the land of conscious hip-hop and style. Easily my favorite part of Oakland, Old Town Oakland boasts of moldings of classic Victorian-era buildings and elaborate peaks and turrets. Historically, it’s where Oakland locals used to put on their Sunday best and strut; today, it’s an eclectic mix of businesses, cafes, and indie shops like Owl N Wood.
I discovered Owl N Wood through a delicious local coffee roaster, Red Bay Coffee. The owner was rocking a black version of this dope sweater. After raving about their house charcoal latte, I asked where he purchased the sweater and coincidentally, he mentioned that it is from his wife's boutique in Old Town Oakland and before flying back to San Diego, I knew I had to stop by. Owl N Wood's shoppe did not disappoint. With a collection of carefully hand-picked vintage items and small batch locally designed and sewn products, Owl N Wood offers functional styles that boast of pride and beauty. Owl N Wood graciously provided me this original Owl N Wood sweater for a quick photo-shoot and I just had to purchase this one-of-a-kind vintage blazer. Pairing both with my favorite spring cropped jeans by James Jeans, I instantly felt like one of the cool kids. If you are a local or visiting, make sure to visit Owl N Wood in Old Town Oakland or check-out their on-line store for beautiful things stamped with Oakland culture.
